KANCHANABURI police supported by soldiers rounded up 95 illegal migrants from last night to early this morning (Sept. 28) after they had sneaked in from Myanmar and were being taken for jobs in Bangkok, Rayong, Samut Sakhon and within Kanchanaburi itself with each of them having paid 15,000-30,000 baht to the smugglers, Naewna newspaper said.
Pol. Col. Santi Phithaksakul, head of Thong Pha Phum police station, together with Col. Chalermchai Chadchai, head of the 9th Infantry Regiment, led a team of policemen and soldiers in setting up a checkpoint in this district to apprehend the illegal migrants after getting a tip-off that a large number were being taken deeper in the country.
At around 3 a.m. two pick-up trucks converted into fresh food and seafood delivery vehicles approached the checkpoint at Vajiralongkorn Dam. Upon being stopped and searched 39 illegal job-seekers were found crammed within. In the first vehicle, driven by Mr. Bai, 45, were 21 of them and in the second vehicle, driven by Mr. Sarayuth, 33, 18.
