If you are coming to Thailand for the first time, do NOT be naive!
Thailand is no different than any other country, and in some cases, even worse.
The moniker Land of Smiles may have been true many years ago, but not today.
Tourists should be aware of the following:
Scams – Do your research on the huge number of different scams that Thai people will try to pull on you in Thailand.
Pickpockets – Pickpockets operate in many busy locations throughout the county. Do NOT carry your passport or wallet in you back pocket.
Fighting – Do NOT get in any fights or try to help any other foreigner in a fight against Thai people.
Drunk and Disorderly – This will not end well if you get drunk and do foolish things.
The Laws – The laws are NOT in your favor. Do your best to follow the law!
Ladyboys – Will not be honest with you and may attempt to rob you. Steer clear of any over friendly ladyboys.
Safety – Be advised Safety is a distant last place compared to profit/money. Do NOT think all attractions have a world class level of safety. Zip lines have broken killing tourists here.
Food Poisoning – Eating street food, seafood etc. outside of a 4 or 5 star restaurant brings a chance of food poisoning. Choose where and what you eat carefully.
Ladies of the Night – Depending on you and what the girl thinks about you, she may take every advantage to steal everything you have. Be aware it can happen and they are slicker than you think. Don’t take your eye off them!
Police – Better follow the law as police checkpoints will take advantage of you being a foreigner if you break the law and demand money from you.
Taxi No Meter – Always open the front door and ask the driver “Meter?” before getting in. If he says NO or quotes a flat rate, find another taxi.
Tailors – Tailors will do every single thing they can to upsize you from the original price. Stand your ground on the original price or go somewhere else.
If you are aware of all of these issues, you should be pretty well protected against something unpleasant happening on your trip.
Money is more important here than you are.
Try to remember that!
