Thailand will officially enter the cool season on Thursday, with the coldest period between mid-December and early February, according to the Thai Meteorological Department.
The cool season is considered to have begun once temperatures in the upper part of the country consistently drop, winds shift to the Northeast or East, and rainfall decreases significantly, said Suchada Thaensap, spokeswoman for the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society.
“However, that doesn’t mean every area will feel cool at the same time,” she said. “People should prepare for fluctuating weather conditions during this transitional period, including heavy fog, frost, and hazardous driving conditions.”
She said low temperatures in Thailand would average 21-22°C, similar to the cool season last year.
Mountaintop temperatures may drop to 7-8°C and there could be frost on some mornings in the northern and upper northeastern provinces of Mae Hong Son, Chiang Rai, Phayao, Nan, Loei, Nakhon Phanom and Sakon Nakhon.
The lowest temperatures in Greater Bangkok during the season ar forecast at 18-20°C.
Sukanyanee Yawincharn, director-general of the Meteorological Department, said that during the first few weeks of the cool season, weather could fluctuate. There could still be occasional rain in parts of the Northeast, the Central Plains, the East and Greater Bangkok.
In the South, however, the rainy season usually persists into late November.
The department also reported that Tropical Storm Fengchen was centred over the upper South China Sea at 4am in Tuesday. It is expected to approach Hainan and central Vietnam on Wednesday or Thursday before weakening under the influence of a cold air mass spreading from China. It will not pass over Thailand.
