One of the main challenges to planting a vegetable garden in rural Isaan, is the extremely hard soil.
A lot of preparation work has to be under taken to break up the extremely hard clumps of earth.
The hot sun dries out the soil quickly, making the soil hard with large clumps.
These all have to be broken up by hand.
It would be ideal to have a roto-tiller to do this job, but most simply cannot afford it.
You can buy smalls bags of good dirt (10 baht)and any garden shop and mix this in to provide the best soil base possible.
After planting your starting plants (Veggie starter plants 10 baht each), you need to water generously and keep watering everyday, to keep the soil was getting hard.
It is a lot of work, however, when you see the results of the fresh vegetables, you know all the hard work was work it!
