Alcohol Sales Ban for Makha Bucha Day 2026 – What You Need to Know
Makha Bucha Day, one of Thailand’s most important Buddhist holidays, will be observed on Tuesday, March 3, 2026.
Under Thailand’s Alcoholic Beverage Control Act, the sale of alcoholic beverages is prohibited nationwide on this day.
What does this mean?
No alcohol sales in shops, supermarkets, convenience stores, bars or restaurants.
Violations may result in up to 6 months in prison, a fine of up to THB 10,000, or both.
Are there any exceptions?
Yes. Alcohol sales are allowed in specific licensed venues, including:
• International airport passenger terminals
• Legally registered hotels
• Certain licensed entertainment venues
• Approved venues hosting major national or international events (with strict control measures)
For all other locations, the alcohol sales ban remains strictly in effect.
Sellers should remember:
• Do not sell to anyone under 20 years old
• Do not sell to visibly intoxicated persons
Makha Bucha Day commemorates the historic gathering of 1,250 enlightened monks who assembled without prior arrangement to hear the Buddha’s teachings — a day of reflection, merit-making, and temple ceremonies across Thailand.
