Tips to Stay Cool

April is the hottest month of the year in Thailand.

It is also the time for Songkran Festival, when many people will be outside.

Here are some key tips we use in Isaan to try to keep cool.

However, as most of the rural regions are manual labor regions, workers are out in the direct sun all day and can only wear broad brimmed hats and long sleeves clothes, facemasks and take plenty of water breaks.

Key Tips to Beat the April Heat:

Schedule Early or Late: Visit attractions, temples, and do trekking in the early mornings (e.g., 5:30 a.m. – 10 a.m.) or late afternoons to avoid the highest temperatures.

Cooling Products: Apply Snake Brand Prickly Heat Powder to your body after a shower for a long-lasting cooling effect.

Sun Protection and Clothing: Wear light-colored, loose-fitting cotton or linen clothing. Use a UV-blocking umbrella for shade when walking, and always apply high-SPF sunscreen.

Hydration: Drink far more water than you think you need.

Eat “Summer” Foods: Try traditional Khao Chae (rice soaked in jasmine-scented ice water) or Nam Kang Sai (Thai shaved ice). While counterintuitive, eating spicy food like Som Tam helps by inducing sweat, which naturally cools the body.
