Doing Without Western Things

When you move to Thailand, tight budget or not, you are going to see western foods you use to eat all the time in the US.

You will start salivating at the thought of enjoying these tastes from back home.

Orange Juice US $6.13 a carton

However, you may be shocked to see the price of some items.

So shocked you will put it back on the shelf and walk away.

Getting use to living in Thailand, for many, means learning to live the Thai way and budget appropriately.

There is something wrong when Bertolli Virgin Olive Oil is over US $30 a bottle.

So we learn to eat local, shop local, (despite all the hygienic concerns) and avoid stores like Lotus’s and Makro that sell western foods as much as possible (Although realistically not avoidable).

Gillette Shaving Gel US $7.35

It doesn’t take long to learn you can spend more here in rural Thailand buying American products than you would in the USA.

The big question is whether or not you can learn to live without them?

Can you still enjoy living in rural Thailand without all the comforts from America?
