This is Isaan

Most people see scenes like this and can never understand how this is actually Thailand?

They equate Thailand with beaches, resorts, cities, entertainment, nightlife and more.

In reality, the majority of the entire country of Thailand is rural in nature like this.

This is the farm belt of Thailand.

Miles and miles of sugarcane fields and rice.

Not much else.

The pro’s and con’s of a rural life in Isaan?

PRO’S

Cost of living is the cheapest in all of Thailand

No traffic, no crime

Simple people that are the most friendly to foreigners and willing to help

No bars, nothing to waste money on

Fresh air, fresh fruit and vegetables

Quiet, simple life

CON’S

Nothing to do without traveling at least 1 hour +

No malls, movies theaters, indoor restaurants

No western food

The education level is very low.

People are set in their ways and you have to accept that is the way things are done here.

No socializing. You may be the only expat for miles around.

WHO IS ISAAN FOR?

Most expats that end up in Isaan are because they married a gal from Isaan.

I have never met or seen an expat in this area that moved here on their own.

People who can embrace a minimalistic life based around farming rice and sugarcane.

People that can eat rural Thai food and live exactly like the locals.

SUMMARY

If you are looking to move to Thailand to replicate your western life for a cheaper price, Isaan is not for you.

Most expats that live in rural Isaan are married and most seem to be up there in age (70).

You have to be able to live without western friends, find hobbies, and things that can keep you happy.

Many I see are fishing, riding bicycles, walking, taking care of their health.

A simple, clean quiet life, if that is what you are seeking.
