Local Isaan Markets

If you live in a rural Isaan villages, there is a good chance you may be at least 50+km from the nearest grocery store Lotus’s.

In the case, the majority of people have to get their food from the rural local markets.

Ban Thaen Market

Each town has their own local market which is only open 2 days a week, with different towns having markets on different days.

Our village has the market on Thursday’s and Saturday’s. Ban Thaen may be Wednesday and Sunday.

If you plan on eating 7 days a week, you must travel to these alternate towns.

The markets kick off around 4 PM and stay busy until 7 PM, when all the sellers pack up and go home.

Beef is sold at the local market. Be advised this Beef may have been sitting out in the 100f degree hot weather and have flies all about. But that is the way meat is sold in these markets.

Grilled Fish
Raw Pork
Fresh Veggies
Raw Shrimp
Processed Meats
Assorted Drinks
Fresh Durian
Fresh Lychees

Vendors also sell fresh fruits, cold drinks, smoothies, Thai pizza, french fries, deserts, fried chicken and other foods.

Clothes, shoes and toys are also sold in the market.

These markets are a way of life for people in rural villages to eat.

Many in 2026 still cannot afford a car to drive that distance to a grocery store.

Prices are much high in a grocery store like Lotus’s, however, you have a confident feeling of health and cleanliness not found in the local markets.

A way of life, you get use to it quickly.
