Govt Issues Heatstroke Warning

People, particularly vulnerable groups, those with chronic illnesses and outdoor workers, are being urged to take precautions against heat stroke, as temperatures are forecast to rise above last year’s levels.

Ayrin Phanrit, deputy government spokeswoman, said temperatures could reach 42–43 degrees Celsius in high-risk areas, including the provinces of Mae Hong Son, Lampang and Tak, so the public should avoid prolonged stays outdoors.

People are advised to limit outdoor activities between 11am and 3pm, drink water frequently and wear “comfort clothing” to reduce the risk of heat stroke, which can be fatal.

High-risk groups include the elderly, infants and young children, people with chronic diseases, such as heart disease, lung disease and obesity, and those working outdoors. Heat stroke occurs when the body overheats and affects vital systems.

“Avoid staying out in the heat for a prolonged period of time. Also, avoid consuming alcohol and do not leave anyone in the car [unattended], especially small children,” said Ms Ayrin.
