I was in the local market yesterday at 5PM.
There were 2 young boys (3 + 5) sitting on a piece of cardboard in the hot sun.
There was a handwritten sign in Thai on another piece of cardboard that said “We don’t have a mother and our grandmother has no money.”
People had donated maybe 60 thb total (US $2).
Heartbreaking to see this up close.
Not knowing the grandma or whether she would keep the money for herself, I bought the kids dinner and a bag of donuts to take home for later.
Living in rural Isaan, poverty is becoming more and more prevalent every single day as people struggle to find work and make enough to buy food.
It is sad to see and hard to ignore.
Those that have some money are known not to donate.
The rest that wish to, have no money for themselves either.
