Essential Sun Protection Measures

  • Broad-Spectrum Sunscreen: Apply at least 1 oz of SPF 30 or higher 20–30 minutes before going outside. Ensure it protects against both UVA and UVB rays.

  • Check the UV Index: Monitor the local UV index daily; extra precautions (listed above) are essential when levels are 8 or higher.
  • Be Aware of Photosensitivity: Certain medications (e.g., some antibiotics, diuretics, anti-inflammatories) can make your skin more sensitive to the sun, increasing the risk of burning.
  • Protection for Specific Groups: Children and individuals with,, or fair skin (types I and II) require higher protection. 

Preventing Sun Poisoning (Severe Sunburn)
Sun poisoning is a severe, systemic reaction to intense UV damage, causing symptoms like blisters, fever, pain, and dizziness.

  • Avoid Indoor Tanning: Tanning beds emit dangerous UV radiation.
  • Use Extra Protection at Altitude/Water: Snow, water, and high altitudes increase UV intensity, requiring SPF 50+.
