Moving Your Belongings

Once the decision is made to move to Thailand, a second decision has to be what to do with all your belongings?

90% of the people will tell you to sell everything and just buy new once you get to Thailand.

That may be the cheapest option, if you don’t have too much to move.

However, if you own a house full of goods, antiques, collectables, tools, etc. you may want to ship them all to Thailand in either a half or full container.

Issues can be with customs costs, however, if you are married to a Thai and they have been outside of Thailand for 1 year or more, then they do not have to pay customs.

To buy relatively high end items in Thailand is going to cost more in your home country.

People that claim the best option to sell everything and buy in Thailand are probably replacing quality goods with cheap made in China and Thailand goods.

I have a house in Florida, USA and I will sell this house.

Goods that I would like to keep are:

  1. Kitchen – Pots/Pans, Cutlery, Silverware.
  2. Bath Towels
  3. Artwork, paintings, pictures
  4. Computers
  5. Assortment of fine china
  6. Collectible glassware statues
  7. Stereo Speakers (Bose and Infinity)
  8. My husband has a giant amount of tools/toolbox
  9. Large amount of clothes (Like a full walk-in closet amount)

Other things that might be nice, include beds, antique dining room set, and other furniture. (This would require some additional thought)

If you look at the cost of shipping versus buying comparable quality, it would probably work about even.

Appliance/Electronics would be a pass, working on different electricity.

In the end, it may be just easier to sell everything and eat the cost of replacing quality items in Thailand.

It is a personal decision each one of us has to make.
