I recently dined at the Pen Laos Restaurant in Pak Chong with my family.

Pen Laos is a Michelin recognized restaurant from 2023. This is a different recognition than a starred Michelin restaurant. Only recognized by Michelin, not a Michelin starred restaurant.

The restaurant remains one of the most popular Isaan dining destinations in the Khao Yai/Pak Chong area and continues to receive Michelin recognition for its regional cooking, homemade condiments, and consistent execution of Northeastern Thai dishes.
The Michelin recognition is what draws in the 100’s of customers per day.
Michelin inspectors specifically highlighted dishes such as the spicy catfish salad and Laos-style mushroom soup.
We had the steamed fish with lime, grilled pork neck, chicken wings, fried pork ribs, and beef on a stick.

While the food was good, it was no where near as good as Michelin restaurants I have eaten at all over the world.
To me, the place has become so popular and so busy after their Michelin recognition, that it is just average food quality.
There are so many people, to serve them in a timely manner must have meant taking short cuts with the food quality???
They did have some home-made condiments that are deserving of the Michelin name!
Everything else, was quite average and I have had better food in the Pak Chong area at the mom & pop shops.
What Pen Laos Does Exceptionally Well
Authentic Isaan cuisine
Unlike many tourist-oriented Thai restaurants, Pen Laos stays focused on regional flavors rather than watering them down for international visitors.
Consistency
Thousands of recent reviews still indicate that most diners leave satisfied, which is difficult for a large-volume restaurant serving hundreds of guests daily.
Atmosphere
The large open-air garden setting with mountain views remains part of the attraction and complements the Khao Yai experience.
Value
Prices remain relatively reasonable considering its reputation and visitor volume.
Where It Falls Short
A recurring criticism in recent reviews is that:
- Portions can be small.
- Some dishes are less distinctive than they once were.
- The restaurant’s scale makes it feel less personal than smaller chef-driven Isaan restaurants.
- Expectations are extremely high because of the Michelin recognition.
One recent reviewer even argued that the food felt too commercialized and relied on standard ingredients rather than unique local sourcing. While that’s only one opinion, it reflects a criticism sometimes seen when successful regional restaurants grow substantially.
Compared to the Best Isaan Restaurants in Thailand
If I were judging purely on food quality:
Pen Laos is average.
However, I would not put it in the same league as Thailand’s elite destination restaurants where people travel specifically for a once-in-a-lifetime dining experience.
Instead, I would describe it as:
“One of the better Isaan restaurants in the Khao Yai region if you’re visiting Pak Chong.”
My 2026 Rating
| Category | Score |
|---|---|
| Food Quality | 6.0/10 |
| Authenticity | 6.0/10 |
| Consistency | 7.0/10 |
| Service | 9/10 |
| Atmosphere | 9/10 |
| Value | 7.0/10 |
| Overall | 7.3/10 |
Verdict
If Michelin inspectors visited today in 2026, I do NOT think Pen Laos Khaoyai would still comfortably merit inclusion in the Michelin Guide.
Personal opinion from June 2026 dining experience.
