Riding a Motorbike in Isaan

Here are a few tips for riding a motorbike in Isaan.

Never assume Thai drivers are professional drivers because many here will have no license or formal driving training.

Be on the lookout for farm vehicles and motorbikes with side carts going slow.

Potholes – Potholes in the road are extremely dangerous. You must always be aware of any potholes and they are numerous. Village roads are notorious for potholes.

Speeders – Since there are NO police here, locals will drive their vehicles at extremely high speeds. Always use your mirrors to understand where the traffic is.

Passing – Villagers will pass you in the most unsafe manners. Be cautious making a right turn as a screaming motorbike may try to pass you on the right as you are turning.

U-Turns – Never pull out of a U-Turn in front of ongoing traffic which may be traveling over 100+km per hour.

Never pass on a blind curve. Sounds like common sense but many Thai’s will do this unsafe maneuver.

Most of all be a patient and defensive driver and learn the habits of the local drivers.
