Rot I-Taen

The vehicle is a type of modified agricultural truck found throughout rural Isaan, commonly known as a rot i-taen (รถอีแต๋น) or rot i-taek (รถอีแต๊ก).

  • These vehicles are locally made, inexpensive, and versatile, used primarily by farmers for transporting goods and produce.
  • They are characterized by their simple construction, often featuring an exposed engine and a basic body built on a chassis.
  • The name is an onomatopoeia derived from the sound of its single-cylinder diesel engine.
  • Depending on local regulations, these agricultural trucks may be registered and used on public roads, and require mandatory insurance.
  • Most farming families with own one of these trucks and for many it is their only mode of transportation.
