Sufficiency Economy Philosophy

The simplistic philosophy of the King of Thailand, particularly the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX), is best encapsulated by the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy (SEP)

This philosophy, while applicable at all levels of society and to various aspects of life, can be described through its core tenets:

  • Moderation: Living within one’s means, avoiding excess, and consuming only what is necessary, without overindulgence.
  • Reasonableness: Making decisions thoughtfully and carefully, considering the consequences of actions, and basing choices on sound judgment and principles.
  • Self-immunity (or Prudence): Building resilience to face challenges and external shocks, adapting to changing circumstances, and being prepared for uncertainty.

The simplistic philosophy is more prevalent in Isaan and other under-developed areas where people have low finances.

No money means living with less, not missing what you ever have.

Even though HRM believed in the simplistic philosophy, middle class and rich Thai’s believe the opposite.

Money and power. Show off your money to get more power.

It is quite a clash for simplistic living people and those Thai’s driving around in Lamborghini’s.

These three principles are underpinned by two conditions:

  • Knowledge: Possessing the necessary understanding and skills to make informed decisions and apply the principles effectively.
  • Morality: Acting with honesty, integrity, and consideration for others, upholding ethical values in personal and professional life.

In essence, the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy advocates for a balanced and sustainable way of living, prioritizing well-being and resilience over rapid, unchecked economic growth.

It emphasizes a “middle path” approach, finding a balance between excess and hardship, applicable to individuals, communities, and the nation as a whole.

To bad Thailand cannot get the rich Hi-So’s buying into this.
