Bringing Medicines

Thailand has specific regulations regarding carrying medications into and out of the country, especially for narcotics and psychotropic substances.

Here’s a breakdown of the declaration forms and requirements:

1. Permit for carrying medications into Thailand (Form IC-2)

  • Who needs it: Travelers with prescriptions for narcotic drugs (Schedule II and III) or psychotropic substances (Schedule II, III, and IV) as defined by the Narcotics Code.
  • Purpose: To obtain permission from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to import medication for personal use.
  • Quantity allowed: A maximum 90-day supply is allowed for Schedule II and III narcotics, while psychotropic substances can be brought in for a maximum 30-day supply without a permit. A permit is needed for psychotropic substances between a 31 and 90-day supply.
  • How to apply: Applications can be made online at http://permitfortraveler.fda.moph.go.th/ at least 15 days prior to arrival.
  • Documents needed: A copy of your passport and a prescription or medical certificate from your physician detailing the patient’s information, medical condition, medication name, reason for prescription, dosage, total amount, and the physician’s details are required.
  • Upon arrival: Medications and documents should be declared at the Red Channel at Thai airport customs.
  • Original Packaging: Keep all medications in their original prescription bottles with clear labeling showing the contents.
  • Documentation: Always carry a certificate or prescription from your doctor that includes:
  • Your name and address.
  • The identified medical condition.
  • The name of the medications and the reason they were prescribed.
  • The dosage and total amount prescribed.
  • The name, address, and license number of the prescribing physician.

Changes in Regulations: Thailand’s medication regulations can change, so it’s essential to check the latest requirements before each visit, on the FDA’s website.

  • Consult Your Doctor: If your medications are prohibited from import into Thailand, consult your doctor to determine alternate options.

By following these guidelines and diligently checking for any updates, you can help ensure a smooth and compliant process when bringing your necessary prescription medications to Thailand.
