Growing Mafai (มะไฟ)

Mafai is a summer fruit and is typically in peak season between May and August.

This fruit, as you can see in the video, grows extremely well here in Chaiyaphum.

It is a native tropical fruit that is particularly popular in the Isan and Northern regions of Thailand, where it is locally referred to as mak fai (หมากไฟ)

What is Mafai?

  • Appearance: These fruits grow in dense, grape-like clusters directly on the tree’s trunk and branches. They have a smooth, yellowish, pinkish, or sometimes reddish skin.
  • Inside: Peeling the soft skin reveals 2 to 4 translucent, white, juicy segments, each containing a seed.
  • Taste: The flavor is a refreshing mix of sweet and tart, with a texture similar to a soft, juicy marshmallow or mangosteen

If you live in Isaan and have land, plant a couple of Mafai trees.

It is a delicious fruit all people in Isaan love to eat.
